A German merchant, Neufeld was captured by the Mahdists when seeking to purchase gum arabic west of Dongola . He was sent to Omdurman where he was held captive, often in chains, until his release following the battle of Omdurman, "he returned to the Sudan after the occupation and later set up as a tourist agent in Aswan; in 1914 he returned to Germany on the outbreak of the First World War... his subsequent fate is unknown."
