Fortune (1813-1880) a keen traveller and botanist, made four journeys into the interior of China where he collected plants for the Horticultural Society. He describes his travels between 1843 and 1845 through the provinces of Guandong, Fujian and Zhejiang, ending in Shanghai. Far from being the "northern provinces" the regions he describes are in fact just north of Canton province. c.f. Lust 1236; Cordier 205.
