Stuart Brockman talks through the process of binding

Maggs were recently honoured to host a visit from London's Athenaeum Club to talk about the passion for collecting bookbindings.

This is a subject which is close to my heart; my much-missed cousin, Bryan Maggs, was both one of the great dealers of bookbindings and a fine amateur binder in his own right. I think it was this combination of seeing and doing which left the greatest impression on me, teaching me that a bookbinding is about more than just surface detail. Whether it is the lavish tooling on the covers, or the skilful sewing which allows a book to open in the hand just so, each binding contains an element of the binder's own spirit.

Ted Bennett and Stuart Brockman with their bindings

One of the great privileges of working with contemporary bindings is having the opportunity to meet their creators. Stuart Brockman and Ted Bennett, President and Licentiate respectively of the Designer Bookbinders, kindly volunteered their time to talk about the intricate details of their work and the meaning behind their designs.

Stuart Brockman has been binding alongside his father, James, since 1995, and they now run the bindery as a family business with Stuart's wife Louise, who makes the marbled papers used in his bindings; his work is represented in private and institutional collections worldwide. Ted Bennett is one of the most exciting young bookbinders working today, after completing the Queens Bookbinding Apprenticeship Scheme he has gone on to work with Stuart at Brockman Bookbinders.

A selection of contemporary bindings

To mark the visit, we laid on an exhibition of modern bindings, with a small number of rather more historic examples. Alongside work by Ted and Stuart, there were a number of fabulous bindings commissioned by a private collector from some of the most accomplished bookbinders working today.

From Maggs' shelves came several bindings from the collection of Bryan Maggs, including a spectacular example created by Bryan's teacher William Matthews, and a selection of the Christmas bindings, which were created as gifts for the women of the Maggs family in the early 20th century, by the great binders Sangorski & Sutcliffe.

Three bindings by Bryan Maggs

It was an honour to display three of Bryan's own bindings; an edition of the Fleurs du Mal, which was one of his favourite texts; a copy of the Golden Cockerel Press edition of Ana the Runner, gifted to me by my parents on the day of my birth; and a copy of the Voyage of the Cap Pilar, on which my relative Charles Maggs was a crew member.

In addition to fine binding, Brockman Bookbinders also carry out exceptional restoration and box making, you can find out more at their website
