Orwell scholar Ian Angus (1926-2022) worked as the Deputy Librarian at University College London, during which time he co-edited, in collaboration with Sonia Orwell, Orwell's Collected Journalism, Essays and Letters (1968). In addition, Angus was instrumental in establishing the Orwell Archive at University College. Later, along with Peter and Sheila Davison, Angus edited the enormous 20-volume edition of The Complete Works of George Orwell (1997-8).
Maggs Bros. acquired Angus’ library, with a substantial portion of his collection being comprised of Orwell’s works and related material. Angus’ Orwell collection includes not only first US editions of Orwell’s most well-known classics such as Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), but also various editions of Orwell’s many other novels as well as his essays; the collection is a testament to the breadth of Orwell’s writings.
