We recently acquired some books and letters signed by the important 20th century illustrators and children's book authors Raymond Briggs and Maurice Sendak to Julia McRae.
McRae was a key figure in children's book publishing and one of the first women to become a board member in any publisher's boardroom. She developed close relationships with the authors she worked with, as is made so clear by the warm notes left to her in these books and correspondences.
The list includes: an autograph card from Raymond Briggs with an original illustration of Julia McRae; inscriptions and original drawings by Maurice Sendak in 'The Bee-Man of Orn', 'Hector Protector', and 'The Griffin and the Minor Canon'; and signed letters from Sendak in 'A Kiss for Little Bear', and 'In the Night Kitchen.
