A major historical study of the Bank of England from its foundation through to the Second World War, commissioned by the Bank and published to mark its 250th anniversary. The distinguished economic historian Sir John Clapham (1873-1946) was given free rein with the Bank's surviving books and papers, and the work remains of vital importance.
