First edition. Numerous photographic plates. Japanese text. Large 8vo. Original flexible boards (slight staining, wear to spine, top right corner sunned), but overall still a very good copy. Unpaginated. Tokyo, Hochi Shinbunsha, dated Showa 9, [i.e, 1934.
Hochi Newspaper was founded in 1872, and it was forced to merge with Yomiuri News in 1942. In 1934 it sponsored a competition for adverising photography specifically asking for snapshots rather than studio photographs. The present publication is devided into three categories, namely 'highest prize' (tokusen), 'honourable mention' (kasaku), and 'selection' (jinsen). A superb example of modernist advertising photography featuring soap, soya-sauce, sweets, tabi, and sake. The first prize went to Ogawa Shinichi, followed by Tanahashi Yukichi and Daimon Hachiro.
