With Admiral John Lort Stokes' signature to upper flyleaf. 1846 was the year that Stoke's published his two-volume account of his time on the Beagle.
In July the same year, he was made commander of HMS Acheron which carried out a four-year surveying voyage of New Zealand. He almost certainly had this book with him on the voyage.
