One of the classic English travel narratives of the eighteenth century, Hanway’s book includes a wealth of informative detail about the countries he visited, especially regarding the unsettled state of Persia. The first volume contains the narrative of the expedition, while the second covers the history of Persia and Central Asia in general. Throughout the work Hanway has appended memoranda and comments from a variety of sources. One of these is a twelve page account of the attempts made by George Thompson and Reynold Hogg to open up trade with Khiva and Bokhara in 1746. The second edition is revised and corrected from the first. It has all the plates found in the first edition.Cox, p255.
