Beaufort's "Karamania" was the great book of travels of its day - sound substantial and learned, and full of interest, both to the man of science and the scholar. It was this book that induced Fellowes, Spratt, Forbes and Charles Newton, to go to Asia Minor... " (Dawson, Memoirs of Hydrography..., 1885).
