Drawn by... From a Sketch by Paul Desetz. Water-colour en grisaille on board, 12" x 17", caption title tipped to the lower edge. Pencilled date verso, 10/6/05. Corners a little frayed, else very good. [Produced for the Graphic,], 1905.
Caption continues, "The King [Alphonse XIII] and President Loubet were returning to the Quai d'Orsay from the Opera, and while passing the Hotel de Louvre, at the corner of the Rue de Rivoli, a bomb was thrown at the Royal Carriage. It exploded on the left side of the carriage, the side on which President Loubet was sitting. Captain Schneider , who was gallping on this side of the carriage, was wounded in the hand. A horse belonging to a member of the Municipal Guard was killed, and the mount of Captain Garnier, who was riding on the other side of the carriage, was slightly wounded. A young man named Arnould was arrested on the charge of having thrown the bomb, and three men were arrested as accomplices."
The events occured on the 31st May 1905 and arrests were made, but we have been able to find no record of "Arnould" The Spanish anarchist Alexander Farras (or Avino) was responsible, but never caught. Four anarchists, including Charles Malato, were arrested November 27, tried and acquitted of complicity in the attack. Highly atmospheric night scene, the full blast of the "infernal machine" is concealed behind a startled horse and its rider which dominate the foreground.
