The tenth edition is important as it contains a new preface. Wallace states " Since the work was publish twenty-one years ago, several naturalists have visited the Archipelago; and in order to give my readers the latest results of their researches I have added footnotes whenever my facts or conclusions have been modified by later discoveries." Though with fewer pages than earlier editions a much smaller typeface has allowed the text to be expanded.
