First edition of this important description of Sicily with observations on geography, geology, climate, folklore and so on. William Henry "Mediterranean" Smyth (1788-1865) was tasked by the Admiralty with conducting a marine survey of the region. One of the products was his important chart-book of Sicily, which this text was intended to accompany.

The aquatint plates have been described as "probably the most exquisite specimens of uncoloured aquatints to be found in any book" (Prideaux).
