Maggs Bros. Ltd.

A beautiful album of original drawing of Peking (Beijing) made during or shortly after WWII. The album opens with a map of the city, Tian-an-men, a pailou gate, a ferry in Beihai Park, and goes on to record various street scenes, incl. water and coal delivery, and some scenes in street restaurants. The artist observes the local customs with a warm eye.

Fujiwara Hidehiko (dates unknown) was a noted Japanese cartoonist. In the 1920s he published articles for Shufu-no-tomo (the Housewife's friend) magazine. During the war he went to China where he was involved in the production of 'Beijing Manga', published by the Wude Baoshi publishing house, and itself under the control of the Japanese military from 1940 onwards. He also wrote contributions to Hokushi (North China) magazine.
