An enterprising economic survey of the United Arab Emirates, which charts the first years of modernisation after the discovery of commercial quantities of oil. Fenelon's work was one of the first monographs to focus solely on the economy the UAE (then called Trucial States) as it entered "into the main currents of world trade and world politics", and was published with the intention of encouraging other scholars to "undertake more detailed economic studies of the individual shaikhdoms." (p.5).
This second edition revised adds several interesting appendices, including an outline of Abu Dhabi's five year development plan, 1968-72 (p.148).
